Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States, was a man of many talents. In addition to being a statesman and writer, he was also a prolific inventor who made important contributions to several fields, including science, technology, and communication. Here are some of his most notable inventions and innovations.
Bifocal glasses: Franklin is credited with inventing bifocal glasses, which feature two different types of lenses in one frame to correct both near and farsightedness.
Lightning rod: In 1752, Franklin conducted his famous kite experiment, which demonstrated the electrical nature of lightning. He then developed the lightning rod, a metal rod placed on the roof of a building, which serves as a conductor for lightning strikes, preventing fires and other damage.
Stove: Franklin invented a stove, also known as the "Franklin Stove," that was much more efficient than traditional fireplaces. The stove had a metal casing and several vents that allowed for greater heat control and a cleaner burn.
Glass armonica: This musical instrument, also known as the "glass harmonica," consists of a series of glass bowls that rotate on a spindle. Franklin helped to popularize the instrument by arranging concerts and promoting it as a therapeutic tool.
