Sir Walter Raleigh was an English explorer, writer, and soldier during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He helped organize English expeditions to North America and supported the attempt to establish the Roanoke Colony. Later, he fell out of favor with the king, was imprisoned in the Tower of London, and was eventually executed in 1618.
