With an urban population of more than 24 million people, Shanghai is the largest city in China and currently ranks as the largest city by population in the world. Unlike many Chinese cities, Shanghai is relatively new. It only became a major city in the 19th century. Today, however, Shanghai is the commerical, financial, and industrial center of mainland China. In addition to being the birthplace of Chinese cinema, Shangahi is the world's largest port. The Donghai Bridge, linking Shanghai to the Yanshang Islands, is the longest cross-sea bridge in the world.

Shanghai means "city on the sea."
