Located in northern India on the banks of the River Yamuna, the city of Delhi surrounds the Indian capital of New Delhi, which is actually considered an administrative quarter of Delhi.
Delhi itself is one of the world's oldest continuosly inhabited cities. Settlements in present-day Delhi date back to 300 B.C. The ruins of at least seven other ancient cities have been found at Delhi. Delhi and New Delhi feature three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as the India Gate, a large illuminated gate that commemorates Indian soldiers who died in World War I. Delhi is also the site of Jama Masjid Delhi, the largest mosque in India. Its courtyard can hold up to 25,000 worshippers.
