Berlin in the largest city and capital of Germany. It was founded in the 13th century and served as the capital of Prussia from 1701, the German Empire (1871-1918) and the Third Reich (Nazis) from 1933-1945. Much of the city was destroyed in 1945 at the end of World War II by Allied forces. In 1961, the Berlin Wall was erected to prevent continued emigration between West and East Germany. The wall became a symbol of Communist oppression and was toppled in 1989, in what became one of the most dramatic news events in the 20th century. Berlin and Europe were officially reunited in 1991.

Today, Berlin is a major European center of education, politics, and science. Other industries include traffic engineering, optoelectronics, IT, vehicle manufacturing, health care, biomedical engineering, and biotechnology. Berlin is a mjajor tourist destimation and is the third most visited city in the European Union. One of Berlin’s most famous Landmarks is the Brandenburg Gate - the only remaining city gate in Berlin. It was completed in 1793.
