Jakarta, Indonesia

Jakarta is the largest city in Indonesia, the seventh largest city and fourth largest urban area in the world, and the largest Muslim city in the world. Over 30,000,000 people live in or around Jakarta. It even has its own stock exchange. Located on the Indonesian island of Java, Jakarta was formerly named Sunda Kalapa (397-1527), Batavia (1619-1942) and Djakarta. Today, it is one of the economic, cultural, and educational hubs of southeast Asia.

At least 13 different rivers flow through Jakarta, the most important of which is the Ciliwung River, which divides the city into its eastern and western principalities. Because over 40% of the city is below sea level, Jakarta is often plagued by terrible floods. Despite its size, Jakarta is an extremely poor city. Less than a quarter of Jakarta's residents have access to clean water.
