During the Civil War, countless women on both sides of the struggles signed up to serve as nurses, organized ladies' aid societies and groups, and provided food and clothing to soldiers. Over 3,000 women worked as nurses for the Union Army, and some 20,000 women worked in other capacities. Others worked as spies, seamstresses, and cooks, while others served as "matrons" for soldiers away from home. Click below to learn about a famous woman of the Civil War.
