An arid region with little or no precipitation. An area is considered a desert if it receives ten or less inches of precipitation per year.

What is an Example of a Desert?

The Sahara Desert, the world's largest hot desert (Antarctica is actually considered a desert), stretches some 3.5 million square miles across northern Africa. It is nearly the size of the entire United States. Like some deserts, the Sahara has several oases. An oasis is an isolated area of vegetation in a desert, usually surrounding a spring or water source.
