At 2,341 miles in length, the Missouri River is the longest river in America. The Missouri River played a prominent role in America as the waterway in which American explorers Lewis and Clark sailed on their expedition to the unchartered west, hoping to discover that the great river was, or led to, the mythical Northwest Passage. Lewis and Clark, with help from Sacagawea, would be the first non-native Americans to discover the river's source.
The Missouri River rises in an area known as the Three Forks in western Montana's Rocky Mountains, before cascading into a series of spectacular falls. It then flows through the heart of the northern plains in the Dakotas, Nebraska, Iowa, and a portion of eastern Kansas, before crossing through the center of Missouri and emptying into the Mississippi River near St. Louis.
