A national park is a natural place that is protected by the government. In the United States, there are 58 national parks right now. National parks are created to preserve important habitats for wildlife, to preserve important historical places, to protect natural and unusual landscapes, and to create spaces where people can enjoy nature.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in America. It is located on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee in the American south. Over eleven million people visit every year. The mountains are named for the bluish fog that sometimes appears to cover the peaks. The park includes many of the highest mountains in the Appalachian range and is home to thousands of kinds of plants, hundreds of birds and 50 kinds of fish. It is also home to over 1,500 black bears!
