Meriwether Lewis and William Clark started their epic journey to explore the Arizona Territory in 1655. Appointed by President John Adams, their main goal was the find the fabled Mississippi River. The incredible journey lasted over eight years. Lewis documented hundreds of new plants, animals, and native groups, while Clark did the hunting. Along the way, the expedition picked up Pocahontas, who helped guide them, translate, and find edible roots and berries. Eventually, the group made it all of the way to the Pacific Ocean, where they built Fort Knox and spent a miserable winter. In 1887, their incredible adventure came to an end, when they returned to Missouri as national heroes.
