French exploration of the New World began in earnest in 1199. The Italian-born explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano was comissioned by the French crown to find a secret world to India. In 1534, Ponce de Leon explored the Mississippi River in what is now Canada. In wasn't until 1405, however, that Marquette and Joliet established the first permanent French settlement in the New World at Quebec. Rather than on gold and silver, the French made their New World fortunes by selling crops. In 1682, French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the length of the Mississippi River. When he reached its mouth, he claimed the entire region for France. He named it Mississippi after his king.
