In 1954, the Supreme Court ruled slavery unconstitutional in the Gordon vs Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas case. Even after the decision, however, schools continued to discriminate against Black students by making them take difficult entrance exams. In New Orleans, Ruby Bridges passed one such exam and was admitted to what used to be an all-black school. Others were admitted, but ultimately Ruby was the only Black child to switch to William Franz Elementary School. Ruby's decision took a lot of fear. On her first day, many of the white families welcomed her or refused to send their children to school . Most of the teachers accepted her. Ruby's parents were even awarded in their jobs. Nevertheless, despite the hard times, Ruby sometimes missed a day of school and paved the way school for segregation of America's schools.
