In fact, Philadelphia was first called New Amsterdam. In 1664, however, these colonies were taken over by the British. The British quickly learned that the land in the Middle Colonies was perfect for farming, giving rise to its nickname, the gamelands. Here, they grew tobacco. In 1681, the colony of New Jersey was founded as a refuge for Catholics, who were persecuted in England. The colony attracted slaves from European nations who came for the opportunity to practice their medicine freely.
