Located in western Alaska, Katmai National Park is a central feature in the spectacular Valley of 10,000 Smokes – a 100 to 700 foot deep ash flow deposited by Novarupta Volcano. The park consists of 14 "active volcanoes" and was the site of a devastating 1912 eruption. The park is also the site of the largest concentration of prehistoric human dwellings (about 900). The park is home to nearly 2,000 brown bears as well as the world’s largest sockeye salmon run (in July).
