Roanoke Island, North Carolina   The "Lost Colony at Roanoke" was a settlement of 117 men, women and children that landed on Roanoke Island in 1587. It was the first English colony in the New World. Soon after arrival, the first English child in the New World was born – Virginia Dare. The colony was funded by Sir Walter Raleigh and led by John White. Sometime between 1587 and 1590, however, the entire colony disappeared. The only clue that John White found when he returned from an extended trip to England, was the word "Croatoan" carved into a nearby tree. To this day, their disappearance remains a mystery.     United States Landmarks
