The city of Detroit, nicknamed "Motown", or, "The Motor City," was the birthplace of the
automotive industry. Because of its strategic location in between Lake Huron and Lake Erie,
Detroit was a major transporation, shipping, and manufacturing hub in the 1800’s. In 1896, Henry Ford built his first automobile in the city, and by 1908 was mass-producing the Model T. His efficient, "assembly line" system of production, in which each worker had a specialized part in production, became a symbol of the American industrial revolution. Soon General Motors, Chevrolet, and Dodge, all began producing automobiles in Detroit. |
