Jamestown was founded in 1607 by the London Company of Virginia, when three ships landed on a swampy peninsula on May 14 with 104 men. The settlement was named Jamestown after King James and became the first permanent English settlement in the New World.

Yorktown |

In 1781,Generals George Washington and Comte de Rochambeau combined to defeat General Charles Cornwallis and the British Army of more than 10,000 soldiers at Yorktown, Virginia. The surrender of Cornwallis’s army caused the British government to negotiate an end to the American Revolutionary War. |
