In one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, the Union army, under the command of George Meade, drove back the Confederate Army, under the command of Robert E. Lee, between July 1-3, 1863. The result of the battle was a crushing blow to Confederate forces who were hoping to assert themselves in the North. The battle was a major turning point in the war and was the only major battle fought north of the Mason-Dixon Line. In all, there were over 50,000 casualties. In November of 1863, Abraham Lincoln delivered The Gettysburg Address at the battlefield. Today, it is one of the most famous speeches in American history. |
