Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a seventy mile stretch of barrier islands, once referred to as "The Graveyard of the Atlantic" for the many shipwrecks that occurred because of its dangerous currents and mighty storms. It is best known as the home of the 193 foot tall Cape Hatteras Lighthouse – the tallest lighthouse in America. In 1999, the 129 year-old lighthouse was moved 2,900 feet from its original location to prevent it from toppling due to erosion of the seashore. It now stands some 1,600 feet from the Atlantic Ocean.
