On April 9, 1865 The McLean House in the village of Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, was the site in which Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia and the Confederacy to Ulysses S. Grant and Union forces. The surrender marked the end of the bloody Civil War. The war claimed the lives of over a half million people. Nevertheless, the United States of America was saved, and the reconstruction of the South would begin. |
