The Ohio River is one of the main tributaries of the Mississippi River and forms parts of the borders of West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. The cities of Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Louisville are located along its banks. The rivers forms at the "Golden Triangle" of Pittsburgh, where the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers merge. This "confluence" of three rivers was "prime" real estate in the middle of the 18th century. Its ownership was disputed by British settlers, French settlers, and the region's Native American population, all of whom claimed it as their own. The dispute over this land, which was rich with fur-bearing wildlife, led to the French and Indian War.
