Scripps Level Master uses the game’s most challenging curated spelling-bee-style vocabulary. The built-in pool contains real, practical English words rather than automatically generated word forms. Careers are not permanently locked to a level—you can change the vocabulary setting later while keeping your record and ranking.
All competitors are fictional. Fifty U.S. competitors explicitly represent individual states, while international competitors represent English-speaking nations and regions.

First to 10 points wins. Challenges alternate between Find the Misspelled Word and Spell the Word. In spelling races, you hear the word and type it while the opponent works at the same time. You never see the opponent's letters—asterisks appear one at a time to show their progress.
If you answer incorrectly, the opponent immediately earns the point. If the opponent finishes first, they earn the point. Beat an opponent 10–0 and you earn a shutout.
As you climb the rankings, opponents become faster and more accurate. You can also create and save your own spelling list for classroom lists, weekly spelling words, or individualized practice. Your career tracks wins, losses, spelling accuracy, words spelled, misspellings found, streaks, shutouts and response time.
