Stephen Curry Basketball Card

Growing Up with Sports

Stephen Curry is a basketball player for the Golden State Warriors and was the first person to be named Most Valuable Player by unanimous vote in NBA history. He was born on March 14, 1988, and grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. Curry is the son of former NBA player Dell Curry, and he learned the basics of basketball from playing with his father. While his father was on road trips playing with his team, Curry's mother Sonya, a former Division I volleyball athlete, encouraged him to keep playing and honing his skills in the game.

Electrifying the Nation

Curry went to Davidson College and impressed with his talents in shooting and ball-handling; although larger schools such as his father's alma mater, Virginia Tech, failed to offer him a scholarship. Even at Davidson, Curry quickly established himself as one of the most electrifying players in college basketball, leading his team to victories in the NCAA Tournament against Gonzaga University, Georgetown University, and the the University of Wisconsin in 2007. In 2009, he was drafted to play for the Golden State Warriors. After 2010, he averaged more than 22 points per game, and finished second in balloting for Rookie of the Year. Curry clinched a spot on the USA Men's Basketball Senior National Team, and won a gold medal at the 2010 World Championships. In 2012, he continued his upward trajectory by setting an NBA record of 272 three-pointers.

The Birth of a Star

In 2014, Curry and his fellow teammate Klay Thompson led the warriors to an early 16-game win streak. They were hailed as the Splash Brothers due to their incredible shooting accuracy; their shots always "splashed" into the net. Curry led the Warriors to an NBA championship in 2015 - the team's first championship since 1975. In May 2016, he became the first person to be named MVP by a unanimous vote. During his speech at the MVP ceremony, Curry said, "I know it inspires a lot of the next generation, a lot of people who love the game of basketball to value the skill of it, value the fact that you can work every single day to get better. You've got to be able to put the time and the work. That's how I got here, that's how I continue to get better every single day."

Three-time Champion

Curry helped the Warriors win the NBA title in 2017 and 2018, both times over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Today, he continues to play for the Warriors and is one of the most popular players in the NBA. His jersey is one of the top-selling jerseys in the NBA and his signature Under Armour shoes are also popular. He remains the NBA's top free-throw shooter in terms of percentage, and ended the 2018-2019 basketball season with an average of 23.5 points per game.
