About Tundra

* Tundra is the largest continuous tract of wilderness left in the world.
* Arctic tundra is characterized by a complete lack of trees, permafrost (a permanently frozen layer of subsoil), freezing cold temperatures, and desert-like plains dotted with lakes, ponds, and bogs. The growing season may last only 50 or 60 days. In the northernmost expanses, summer is completely light and winter is completely dark.
* Alpine Tundra is found in the world’s highest mountain ranges. The growing season here may last for as long as 180 days and the soil is not permanently frozen.
* Animals that live in the Arctic tundra include polar bears and Arctic foxes. Many have white fur, coloring, or feathers to blend in with their surroundings.
