Stock the Shelves Lesson Plan
The “Stock the Shelves” game will help students practice the skills of graphing points on a basic coordinate plane. Students will be able to demonstrate correct locations of points on the X/Y axis of a basic coordinate plane.
Common Core Standards:
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates.
Begin with an interactive activity called “Grade 5 Common Core Standards: Basic Coordinate Plane”. This is a great whole group activity or independent warm-up and review of graphing points on a basic coordinate plane. This activity can be located at the following link. http://mrnussbaum.com/grade5standards/56-2/
Coordinate Grid Battleship – Kids can play with a partner and draw three battleships, one that spans three spaces, one that spans four spaces, and one that spans five spaces. Battleships can be positioned vertically, diagonally, or horizontally. Played just like the game Battleship, the first person to sink their opponent’s ships wins! (e.g. 3, -2)
Play the instructional video at http://mrnussbaum.com/stockshelves before having students play the game on their computers or iPads. You can also play this game using an interactive whiteboard as a whole group, if students are only used to graphing points in the first quadrant. If students are practiced at graphing points in all 4 quadrants, this game could be played on individual computers or as a whole group.
