Sea Horse Chronicles Lesson Plan
In this lesson, students will demonstrate ability to count numbers in sequence, even when starting above one or above ten. Ideally, they will demonstrate fluency in counting from one to one hundred.
Common Core Standards:
This lesson reinforces common core standards CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.A.1, CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.A.2, and CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.A.3, CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.B.4c, and CCSS.Math.Content.K.CC.C.6 for kindergarten.
Descriptions of the standards can be found here. http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/K/CC
This activity requires the teacher to post a blank hundred chart on a wall and to have cut up a hundred chart into 100 numbered squares (from 1-100). This can work with the linked sheets but the larger the chart is the better.
Teacher passes out 4 or 5 randomized numbered squares to each student and instructs him or her to draw an example of sea life within the square (such as a clownfish or sea horse) and then to color the rest of the square blue. When everyone is finished with their drawings, the teacher will ask the student with the number 1 square to paste their square on the blank number board where the 1 goes, followed by the number two square and so on. The result should be a beautiful sea life, hundred-chart collage. Students should quickly catch on to the sequence and should know when it is their turned based on the number squares distributed to them.
This activity may take up to 45 minutes, depending on how much time is allocated to coloring and how long it takes students to paste.
This song from Finding Nemo may get them in the mood.
Students should watch the instructional video before playing Sea Horse Chronicles on classroom computers. Encourage students to earn a gold medal by correctly sequencing all 100 numbers
Students should complete the Sea Horse Chronicles Number Sequence Worksheet.
