What is an Isthmus?

 

A relatively narrow strip of land (with water on both sides) connecting two larger land areas.

 

What is an Example of an isthmus?

 
The isthmus of Panama is a land bridge that connects North and South America. The Atlantic Ocean borders the north side of the isthmus and the Pacific Ocean borders the south side of the isthmus. In 1914, the Panama Canal was built through the isthmus. The canal revolutionized world shipping. Ships could finally travel from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean without having to sail around the southern tip of South America.
